Project

Sao Tome

Client | International Broadcaster

Project Description

In 2005, Communications Technology Broadcasting (Pty) Ltd was appointed by an international broadcaster to carry the replacement of a directional two tower MW antenna system in Sao Tome.
The existing towers were corroded to such a point that they were deemed not safe to climb, even to change light bulbs.
The contract awarded to Communications Technology Broadcasting (Pty) Ltd was to travel to the Island of Sao Tome, to carry out the demolition of the two 100m towers and replace them with two new 100m towers, much greater in dimensions that the existing ones.

The Challenge

To replace a corroded directional two tower MW antenna system.

The Results

The project was considered a complete success with the new towers being installed in 3 months and the station never stopping heir broadcast service to their desired target areas.

Duration

3 months

Scope of Work

  • Supply all labour, equipment and materials to safely demolish two 100m guyed masts.
  • Supply all labour, equipment and materials to install two new 100m guyed masts
  • To ensure that the broadcast schedule can continue in an omni-directional pattern off one mast while the second mast is being demolished and erected and vice versa.
  • The antenna system normally a directional system with one mast being a radiator and the other a reflector, was to be changed into an omnidirectional antenna system by removing the reflector mast/antenna
This was done by demolishing one while broadcasting on the other. Then swapping over to the new mast, broadcasting in an omnidirectional pattern until the second new mast was complete. At that point the antenna system would be restored to directional.
